Payroll, super and what you cannot pay through B2Bpay

B2Bpay is for paying business bills to Australian billers by bank transfer or BPAY. Standard card rules exclude paying yourself or a related entity, finance or credit, and anything illegal. For wages and superannuation, the team confirms what is supported before you rely on it.

Can I pay payroll or super with a credit card through B2Bpay?

Short answer: B2Bpay is designed for paying business bills: suppliers, the ATO, rent, insurance, utilities and similar. Wages and superannuation guarantee contributions sit outside the typical bill payment, so call 1300 205 575 and have the team confirm what is supported for your business before you plan around it.

We would rather tell you that plainly than promise something the platform may not do. Published B2Bpay material describes paying billers by bank transfer or BPAY, and lists ATO, government, telco, insurance, utility and supplier payments as the core use. Payroll and super are not in that list, and super in particular has its own compliance channel.

This guide sets out what is clearly within the rules, what needs confirmation, and what standard card rules exclude outright, so you can plan your payments with confidence. For the payments B2Bpay is built for, see how B2Bpay works.

What is clearly within the rules?

Payments to an Australian business or government body for a genuine business expense or liability, made to the payee's bank account or BPAY details, where you are not the payee.

  • ATO liabilities with a payment reference number: BAS, PAYG withholding, PAYG instalments, income tax. See paying the ATO by credit card.
  • Supplier and contractor invoices.
  • Commercial rent, strata levies and property costs.
  • Insurance premiums, council rates, utilities and telcos.
  • Professional fees: accountants, lawyers, consultants.
  • Paying off your own credit card by bank account or PayTo, which earns B2B Points.

On all of these you keep your card's points, earn B2B Points on Earn Plus or Earn Max and get up to 55 days interest-free on card payments. The platform fee is generally a business expense; confirm with your accountant.

What does the team need to confirm?

Anything that is not a straightforward bill to an unrelated Australian payee. The common cases:

Payments to confirm with B2Bpay before relying on them
PaymentWhy it needs confirmingWhat to ask
Employee wagesPayments to individuals rather than business billers; card issuer rules may applyWhether wages can be paid as billers and under what conditions
Superannuation guaranteeSuper is paid through SuperStream-compliant channels, usually a clearing house or the fund's own facilityWhether any super pathway is available and whether it meets SuperStream requirements
Payroll taxA state revenue office liability; depends on the notice carrying BPAY or bank detailsWhether your state revenue office can be added as a biller
Workers compensation premiumsInsurer or scheme dependentWhether your insurer or scheme is already a biller
Overseas suppliersB2Bpay pays by Australian bank transfer or BPAYWhether international payments are available for your business

Call 1300 205 575 or use the contact form. The team is Australian based and answers these questions every day.

Is paying super by credit card SuperStream compliant?

SuperStream is the ATO's data and payment standard for superannuation contributions. Employers must pay super through a SuperStream-compliant channel, which generally means a clearing house, payroll software with a built-in clearing house, or a fund's own compliant facility.

B2Bpay does not describe itself as a super clearing house, and this guide does not claim that it is one. If you want to fund super contributions in a way that involves a card, the question is whether there is a compliant clearing house that can be paid as a biller, and whether doing so meets your obligations. That is a question for the team and for your accountant, not something to assume.

The super guarantee charge, which is a separate ATO liability that arises when super is paid late, has an ATO payment reference number and can be paid like other ATO liabilities. Paying it is never the goal, but if it arises, it is within the ATO payments B2Bpay already handles.

What do standard card rules exclude?

B2Bpay's help pages state that some restrictions apply based on standard credit card rules. You cannot use a credit card through the platform to:

  • Pay for finance or credit, such as loan repayments or paying one credit card with another.
  • Make payments to yourself or a related business entity.
  • Pay for illegal activities.

The related-entity rule catches more than people expect: rent to a company you control, drawings, director loans and intercompany invoices are all out. The finance rule means you cannot put a loan repayment on a card to earn points.

Paying off your own credit card balance through B2Bpay is different and is allowed by bank account or PayTo, where it earns B2B Points at the bank rate (1.00% Earn Plus, 1.87% Earn Max ex GST). What you cannot do is pay a credit card with another credit card.

Why does B2Bpay draw the line here?

Because B2Bpay charges your card as a purchase and pays the biller by bank transfer, the card networks and issuers treat the arrangement as a purchase of a bill payment service. That treatment is what gives you points and interest-free days instead of cash advance fees. It depends on the payments being genuine business bills to third parties.

Payments to yourself or a related entity would amount to turning credit into cash, which issuers treat as a cash advance and which B2Bpay does not allow. Finance and credit repayments fall in the same category. Keeping to the rules protects the purchase treatment for everyone on the platform.

If you are unsure whether a payee is related, ask your accountant; if you are unsure whether B2Bpay will accept a biller, ask the team before the due date.

How to approach payroll-adjacent costs today

Most of the cost of employing people other than wages and super can be paid through B2Bpay now, because the payees are ordinary business billers.

  • PAYG withholding on wages: an ATO liability with a payment reference number, paid like BAS.
  • Recruitment agency and labour hire invoices: supplier invoices.
  • Payroll software and HR subscriptions: supplier invoices.
  • Training providers and conferences: supplier invoices.
  • Contractors with an ABN: supplier invoices, subject to bank account verification before the first payment.

For wages, super and payroll tax, make the call first. When the team confirms what is available, this page will be updated. In the meantime, paying suppliers who don't accept cards covers the mechanics for everything else.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay payroll with a credit card in Australia through B2Bpay?

B2Bpay is built for paying business billers by bank transfer or BPAY, and wages to employees are not among the published use cases. Before planning around it, call 1300 205 575 and have the team confirm what is supported. PAYG withholding on wages is an ATO liability and can be paid like BAS.

Can I pay superannuation by credit card?

Super must be paid through a SuperStream-compliant channel. B2Bpay does not describe itself as a super clearing house. Ask the team whether any compliant pathway is available and confirm with your accountant that it meets your obligations before relying on it.

Can I pay payroll tax by credit card?

Payroll tax is a state revenue office liability. Where your assessment carries BPAY or bank transfer details, it may be possible to add the revenue office as a biller and pay by card; the team confirms for your state. Call 1300 205 575 before the due date.

Can I pay the super guarantee charge to the ATO by credit card?

The super guarantee charge is an ATO liability with a payment reference number, so it can be paid through B2Bpay like BAS or PAYG: you pay by card and B2Bpay pays the ATO by bank transfer with your reference. Allow a few business days for it to appear on your ATO account.

Can I pay workers compensation premiums by credit card?

Where the insurer or scheme invoices with bank transfer or BPAY details, it can generally be added as a biller like other insurance premiums. The team confirms whether your insurer is already set up. See also rates, insurance and utilities.

What can I not pay with a credit card through B2Bpay?

Standard card rules apply: no payments for finance or credit, no payments to yourself or a related business entity, and nothing illegal. Paying your own credit card balance is allowed by bank account or PayTo, not by another credit card.

Can I pay employee wages by credit card and earn points?

Not without first confirming with B2Bpay. Wages are payments to individuals rather than business billers, and card rules around related parties and cash-like transactions apply. Call 1300 205 575 for a definitive answer for your business rather than assuming.
