How B2Bpay works, step by step
Register with your ABN, add a biller such as the ATO or a supplier, and pay by card, bank account or PayTo. B2Bpay pays the biller by bank transfer or BPAY. You keep your card's points, earn B2B Points and keep your interest-free days.
How does B2Bpay work?
Short answer: You pay B2Bpay by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, bank account or PayTo, and B2Bpay pays your biller by bank transfer or BPAY. The biller does not need to accept cards. You keep your card's full points, earn B2B Points on Earn Plus or Earn Max, and keep your interest-free days.
B2Bpay is owned and operated by Zenith Payments Pty Ltd in Mascot, NSW, and more than 40,000 Australian businesses use it to pay suppliers, the ATO, rent, utilities, insurance and other bills. It is PCI DSS compliant and the support team is based in Australia.
The rest of this guide walks through registration, adding billers, making a payment and what happens afterwards. You can start at the B2Bpay sign-up page at any point; there is no joining fee. The home page has a short how it works overview.
Who can use B2Bpay?
Any Australian business with an ABN: sole traders, companies, partnerships and trusts. You register with your ABN, and the platform is designed for business bills.
Personal bills without a business purpose are outside what B2Bpay is for. Standard card rules also apply: B2Bpay's help pages state you cannot use a credit card to pay for finance or credit, to pay yourself or a related business entity, or for illegal activities. See payroll, super and what you cannot pay.
To earn Qantas Points you also need a Qantas Business Rewards membership with the same ABN; the join fee is waived through B2Bpay's link. Velocity Points, Avios and Luxury Escapes Société Points have their own linking steps, covered in Velocity, Avios and Luxury Escapes.
Step 1: Register and choose a plan
Go to the B2Bpay sign-up page, enter your business details and ABN, and create your login. Then choose a plan:
- Essential: lowest fees, your card's points only, no B2B Points.
- Earn Plus: 1 B2B Point per $2 on top of card points.
- Earn Max: 1 B2B Point per $1 on top of card points.
You can change plan at any time. Fees are a percentage of each payment, ex GST, and are shown before you confirm; full detail is in fees, GST and tax deductions.
If you would rather earn Qantas Points directly than convert B2B Points, use the Qantas pathway at the Qantas pathway sign-up page. Either way, you can add extra user logins later so a bookkeeper or colleague can prepare payments.
Step 2: Add your cards and billers
Add one or more cards to My Wallet: Visa, Mastercard or American Express. You can also link a bank account or set up PayTo. Each biller can be assigned its own payment method, so you might pay rent by Amex and smaller suppliers by Visa.
Then add billers. Many Australian businesses are already in B2Bpay's biller list; search for them by name or BPAY biller code. For anyone else, select "Add new biller" and enter their BSB and account number or BPAY details, plus the reference they need to match your payment. B2Bpay verifies payee bank account details before the first payment, so add new suppliers a little ahead of their due date.
For the ATO, the reference is your payment reference number from your BAS or notice of assessment. See paying the ATO by credit card.
If you connect Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks, your bills awaiting payment flow into B2Bpay automatically with the supplier details already filled in.
Step 3: Make a payment
Select the biller, enter the amount and reference, choose the card or account to pay from, review the fee and confirm. You can make payments one at a time, in bulk, or schedule them for a future date.
| Step | What happens | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Card charged | One charge from B2Bpay for the bill plus fee appears on your card | On processing |
| Biller paid | B2Bpay sends a bank transfer or BPAY payment with your reference | Within 3 business days per B2Bpay's help pages; settlement date shown in Payment History |
| B2B Points credited | Points appear in your B2Bpay account (Earn Plus and Earn Max) | 5 days after payment |
| Accounting updated | Bill marked paid and fee recorded as an expense | Automatic with Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks connected |
The ATO advises electronic payments can take up to 4 business days to appear on your account, so do not pay on the due date itself.
Step 4: Track payments, points and statements
Your Payment History shows every payment with its processing date, settlement date and reference, and can be filtered by month or financial year and exported. Your points balance is shown in your account, and you convert B2B Points to your chosen partner when you are ready.
B2Bpay issues a tax statement for its fees, downloadable from the portal, so your accountant has what they need. With an accounting integration connected, each payment is recorded through the B2Bpay Clearing Account as the bill amount plus the fee as an expense; see paying bills from Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks.
Multiple user logins are supported, so an owner can keep control of the card while staff or a bookkeeper prepare payments.
Can I also get paid through B2Bpay?
Yes. The biller product lets your customers pay your invoices by card, with a Pay Now option on invoices from Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks and automatic recording of received payments. Your customers can pay by card even if you do not otherwise accept cards, because B2Bpay receives the card payment and forwards the funds to you.
Received payments arrive in your bank account with the customer's reference, so they are easy to match, and you choose whether to pass the processing fee to your customer or absorb it. Details are on the accept card payments page. The team confirms current fees and any points offer for receiving payments.
